#EarthDay

This Sunday, April 22, is Earth Day. It’s a day for us to celebrate our beautiful planet, and fight to preserve it for future generations. There will be events across the county for you to attend, but please don’t forget to do your part for California’s parks and open spaces — vote Yes on 68 on the June 5th ballot.

This statewide ballot measure will produce a $4 billion investment in the coming years to protect California’s own unique natural resources and ensure every Californian has access to safe parks and clean drinking water. The Los Angeles area would receive over 140 million dollars directly, and be eligible for 2 billion dollars for our parks and natural resources through competitive grant programs.

LA County Needs Prop 68

PROPOSITION 68 is a general obligation bond that invests $4 billion in the coming years to address some of California’s most pressing park, water and natural resource needs. The state legislature passed the California Clean Water & Safe Parks Act (SB5) with bipartisan support and it will appear on the June 5th, 2018 statewide ballot.

Across the Los Angeles area, many lack parks and safe places for kids to play and grow, with one-half of LA residents not residing within 10 minutes of a park. Prop 68 ensures that every Californian has access to safe & accessible parks by creating parks in communities with the greatest need. Prop 68 also invests in clean drinking water by protecting the rivers, lakes, and streams that are the sources of our water. Under Prop 68, the Los Angeles area would receive over 140 million dollars–a major investment in our parks and natural resources:

  • 37.5 million total for the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy; including 15 million to protect and improve the Los Angeles River watershed
  • 67.5 million for the San Gabriel and Lower Los Angeles River and Mountains Conservancy
  • 20 million for a parkway along the Los Angeles River
  • 16 million for the Santa Ana River Conservancy
  • 6 million for the Baldwin Hills Conservancy

In addition to direct funding, the Los Angeles Area is eligible for 2 billion dollars through competitive grant programs in areas ranging from park construction and state park restoration, to drought preparedness and climate resiliency:

  • 655 million for the creation and expansion of safe neighborhood parks, regional parks, and trails in communities with the greatest need
  • 215 million to create and improve local parks, especially in communities that lack access to the outdoors; including 15 million to create and improve local parks in small towns in urban counties
  • 16.5 million for urban forestry projects
  • 30 million for regional parks and open space, including trails, athletic fields, visitor centers, and parks serving youth and communities of color
  • 40 million in matching funds to improve local and regional park infrastructure
  • 5 million for local agencies directed for state park facility restoration, preservation, & protection

Vote #YesOn68 on June 5

On the June ballot, we will have a chance to address some of California’s most important park, water and natural resource needs. A vote Yes on Prop. 68 is a vote to support the California Clean Water and Safe Parks Act, a $4 billion investment in the coming years to protect California’s own unique natural resources and ensure every Californian has access to safe parks and clean drinking water. That’s why OurParks is endorsing Prop. 68.

We’re a part of the Yes on 68 coalition, a broad, statewide bipartisan group of conservation groups, local park advocates, water experts, and business organizations supporting Prop 68. On June 5, please vote YES on Proposition 68.

Not only is Prop 68 is an economic and environmental necessity, it’s also an equity imperative. After years of communities across California lacking access to safe parks and clean drinking water, Prop. 68 finally ensures that all California residents regardless of zip code have access to safe places for kids to play and the safe, clean water that they deserve.

Here in Los Angeles, we cherish our parks. But it has been 15 years since California has passed a statewide bond to provide funds for water, parks, and natural areas. This proposition will help us build on the success of Measure A. Under Prop 68, the Los Angeles area would receive over 140 million dollars directly, and be eligible for 2 billion dollars for our parks and natural resources through competitive grant programs.

Whether you plan to go to the polls or send in an absentee ballot, be sure to join OurParks in voting YES for Prop 68.

P.S. Please follow OurParks on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and share our content every week on social media to spread the word with your friends and family.
